CAREER HIGHLIGHT(S):

Marwan Hamed is one of the leading figures in contemporary Arab cinema, with a career spanning more than two decades. Known for his bold storytelling and visual precision, the Egyptian director broke onto the international stage with THE YACOUBIAN BUILDING, which premiered at the Berlinale and went on to screen at major festivals including Tribeca, Montréal, and São Paulo, where he won Best New Narrative Director. He followed with a string of critically and commercially successful films, including IBRAHIM LABYAD, THE BLUE ELEPHANT, and its record-breaking sequel, BLUE ELEPHANT: DARK WHISPERS, as well as DIAMOND DUST, THE ORIGINALS, and the historical epic KIRA & EL GIN, cementing his position as one of Egypt’s most bankable filmmakers. In parallel with his box office success, Hamed has maintained a strong presence on the international festival circuit, contributing to projects such as 18 DAYS (2011), which screened at Cannes. Across genres, his work blends psychological depth with large-scale storytelling, earning him over 30 awards throughout his career.


TWELVE-MONTH HIGHLIGHT(S):

EL SETT: Hamed’s latest film is a biopic of the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum that world premiered at the 22nd Marrakech International Film Festival before releasing commercially in Egypt and across the Arab World. It held its European premiere in Rotterdam.


IFFR Spotlight: In honor of a two-decade-long career of consistent, record-breaking box office releases, the International Film Festival Rotterdam held a Marwan Hamed Retrospective as part of the Lime Light Program of its 55th edition, in which it screened his entire filmography.
