Founded in 2017 by producer Ahmed El Desouky, Skylimit Production has established itself as a Cairo-based production company working across commercial Egyptian cinema and internationally recognized festival films. Under El Desouky’s leadership, the company has built a diverse slate that includes star-driven mainstream titles as well as prestige festival cinema, reflecting a growing presence in both the local and international film landscape.
Ahmed El Desouky’s producing credits include Halet Hob (2004), which introduced Tamer Hosny, Hend Sabry, and Zeina to cinema audiences; Mesh Ana; Bahebak, the highest-grossing box-office hit in the history of Arab cinema; TAG; the critically acclaimed Happy Birthday; and box office hit Bershama.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY: With Ahmed El Desouky as producer, Happy Birthday became one of the most internationally celebrated Egyptian films of the year. Following its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, the film made history by winning three major awards: Best International Narrative Feature, Best Screenplay in an International Narrative Feature, and the Nora Ephron Award. This marked a rare and significant international breakthrough for an Egyptian feature, immediately positioning the film as one of the standout Arab titles of the year.
The film continued to build momentum across the international festival circuit, receiving major recognition at Palm Springs, São Paulo, Heartland, Mill Valley, and El Gouna. It won the FIPRESCI Prize for Best International First Feature at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Best Performance at the São Paulo International Film Festival for Doha Ramadan, the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature at Heartland Film Festival, the Mind the Gap Audience Award at Mill Valley Film Festival, and the Cinema for Humanity Audience Award at El Gouna Film Festival. Through this run, Happy Birthday moved from an acclaimed festival discovery to one of the most awarded and internationally visible Egyptian films of the year. It was also selected as Egypt’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.
INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION: With Happy Birthday, Skylimit Production strengthened its position as an Egyptian production company with expanding international reach, moving from local production into the global festival and awards circuit while maintaining a clear Egyptian identity and authorship.
BERSHAMA became one of the company’s major commercial breakthroughs. Following its release, the film achieved major box-office success not only in Egypt but across the Arab world, marking an unprecedented regional success. It became the highest-grossing film in the history of Egyptian cinema and the second highest-grossing film regionally after Bahebak, another Skylimit Production title, further confirming El Desouky’s ability to move between internationally awarded festival cinema and large-scale commercial hits.
