While heavily reliant on its international catalog with over 13,600 titles, Netflix has also introduced a few Arabic originals, starting with the Jordanian supernatural horror series JINN, which was released in June 2019. Netflix also took the lead in streaming Arabic classic, obtaining the rights to Egyptian director Youssef Chahine’s films in June 2020 before adding more recent titles from all over the Arab World. In 2022, the streaming giant launched its Because She Created category, which contains 21 films by Arab women filmmakers spanning various genres, including documentary, drama, and romance.
TWELVE-MONTH HIGHLIGHT(S):
Netflix teamed up with the AFAC to support aspiring female directors by introducing them to practices such as scriptwriting and filmmaking by established female directors.
Netflix continued its commitment to working with both established and new voices in the Arab World to tell more layered and multidimensional women's stories, like the second season of ALRAWABI SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, Kuwaiti 1980s-set THE EXCHANGE, Saudi comedy CRASHING EID, Saudi thriller film FROM THE ASHES, which reached Netflix’s top 10 non-English films list in 37 countries worldwide during its first week, and FINDING OLA, which is expecting the release of its second season in 2024.
