Rotana is the Arab world’s largest media group, the Arab world’s largest music label and still the region’s biggest buyer of Arab films—a film acquisition role that now encompasses a more diverse range of Arab nationalities. Rotana has started producing Saudi films, a push into original content that mirrors the ambitious plans of regional SVOD platforms. So far, Rotana has focused on licensing content to other regional streaming platforms, rather than compete directly against them, hatching partnership deals with Wide Khaliji and another with MBC Group to make its TV channels available on-demand to Shahid VIP subscribers. In April, it teamed up with Parisbased OTT platform Alchimie to operate a premium SVOD movie channel, AflamPlusTV, across Europe.
