Nabil Ayouch
Writer-Director
Morocco
This year, Nabil’s latest film CASABLANCA BEATS became the first Moroccan feature to be selected for
Competition in Cannes since Abdelaziz Ramdani’s ÂMES ET RYTHMES in 1962. The film follows a group of
youngsters living in the Casablanca slum district of Sidi Moumen as they participate in a workshop (which
Nabil himself co-founded in 2014) encouraging them to express themselves through hip-hop music and dance;
Wild Bunch is selling the film internationally. Two of Nabil’s previous films premiered at the festival:
MUCH LOVED (2015) that was selected for Directors' Fortnight but then banned back home for its story about
three women working as prostitutes, and HORSES OF GOD (2012) which was shown in Un Certain Regard and won
the François Chalais Award. His RAZZIA (2017) premiered at Toronto and was the official entry of Morocco for
the Oscars.
