Founded in 1972 by the late world-renowned Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, MISR has expanded over the years through many cinemas in Egypt and most importantly through distribution. The company established Orient Films in order to distribute titles directly in Saudi Arabia and the GCC, a move which resulted in better results in those lucrative markets for Egyptian films.
